Artist Statement: The Porcelain Series
The Porcelain Series explores the tension between stability and instability, bridging traditional and contemporary life. Rooted in my nomadic experiences over the past six years, this work reflects my longing for stability through the depiction of the human form in three-dimensional space.
Our lives are a constant physical and psychological interaction with our surroundings. The distorted bodies in these dense spaces are transformed into semi-abstract forms, mimicking the hard surfaces of ceramics. In many older Jamaican homes, porcelain figurines symbolize a stability that seems elusive to today's younger generation. The contorted and transforming bodies in my work represent the psychological struggle to attain this sense of stability.
